"I've been reading books on the early 70's punk rock scene in NYC since I was about 13. That era is the real punk rock to me. In books like "From the Velvets to the Voidoids" and "Please Kill Me" there is always mention of a band called The Magic Tramps. Never too much info, but i would read things like "...the New York Dolls were opening for the Magic Tramps" and "...the Magic Tramps were practing at the Mercer Arts Center when it came down". There would also be pictures of the Tramps every now and then, and thats what really sparked my intrest in them. They were covered head to toe in glitter, psychedllic rags, long frizzy hair, and face paint. Who were these guys? pre-KISS, pre-Dolls, and most definitaly before all the glitter and hair that was to come in the later 70s and 80s.
I was blown away when in 2000 I was visiting friends in Indianapolis and they introduce me to Sesu Coleman. "You ever hear of the Magic Tramps? That is Sesu's band" Whoa! Finally I could find out more about the band that i had tried so hard to find any info about. Sesu told me the greatest stories about them catching KISS playing in their make up boxes before a gig they did together. He told me storys about Eric Emerson the genius and Chris Stein from Blondie. To him they are just friends and to me the people he talks about are legends! When he told me that he was working on a new web page for the Tramps, I lit up inside! That means new pictures, new stories, and hopefully, new or unheard music. I feel its time that the Magic Tramps get the recognition they deserve for being one of the most unique and infulential bands of punk rocks golden age."
